Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to advanced mass spectrometric techniques for material characterization, also at the surface and interface level, and give an overview of the importance of material science for the development of analytical science through the description of advanced functional materials used in analytical chemistry.
- Oggetto:
Results of learning outcomes
- Ability to foresee, understand and choose the proper mass spectrometric techniques for inorganic and organic material characterization, at surface and bulk level, as well as for elemental and compositional analysis
- Ability to formulate proper analytical protocols for the analysis of new and advanced materials
- Knowledge of the principal classes of functional materials used in analytical chemistry and their applications in adsorption, partition, selective extraction and in sensors design

FRONTAL LESSONS
- Functional Materials for Analytical chemistry: Adsorption and partition (chromatography), permselective membranes, ion exchange materials, materials for molecular recognition (enzymes, MIPs), materials for redox catalysis and electrochemical sensors, Chemical Field effect transistors (ChemFET).
- Advanced mass spectrometric techniques for material characterization: Ionization techniques for gas phase and condensed phases (electron impact, chemical ionization, field ionization, field desorption, inductively coupled plasmas, sparks, glow discharge and depth profiling, atmospheric pressure ionization techniques, ion and atom beams, matrix assisted laser desorption ionization, secondary ions mass spectrometry) and their application to the elemental and compositional characterization of polymers, semiconductors and metals. Coupling with separative techniques (chromatography and Field Flow Fractionation). Mass analyser and their applications. High resolution mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. Single particle Mass spectrometry.
