Course objectives

The course is meant to welcome the international students and help them feel at ease in the Italian cultural and linguistic context.  The course is organized by the University Language Center (CLA-UniTO) for the international students of the degree courses taught in English.

  • develop communication skills in Italian in order to feel at ease with everyday life in Italy at a beginner level
  • learn the main vocabulary, morpho-syntactic structures and phonological features of Italian at a beginner level (CEFR A1)

REFERENCE SYLLABUS FOR ONLINE COURSES FROM LEVEL A1 TO LEVEL B1 AIMED AT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

LEVEL A1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) 1

Listening comprehension: Being able to recognize familiar words and very simple expressions related to oneself, family, and the immediate environment.

Reading comprehension: Being able to understand familiar names and words, as well as very simple sentences, for example, those in announcements, posters, and catalogs.

Oral production: Being able to comprehend and use expressions of everyday use and basic phrases to satisfy concrete needs. Being able to introduce oneself and others, and being capable of asking and answering questions about personal details such as where one lives, the people they know, and the things they own.

Being able to interact in a simple way if the interlocutor is willing to repeat or rephrase certain things more slowly and helps formulate what they are trying to say. Being able to ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics or those related to immediate needs.

Written production: Having a basic repertoire of words and expressions related to personal matters and basic concrete situations.

Being able to link words and phrases with commonly used connectors such as "di," "a," and basic connectives like "e" (and) and "ma" (but).

Being able to write simple sentences about oneself or real or imaginary characters, describing where they live and what they do.

Being able to write a short and simple postcard, for example, to send greetings from holidays. Being able to fill out forms with personal information, such as writing their name, nationality, and address on a hotel registration card.

Sociolinguistic appropriateness: Being able to establish basic social contacts using the most common conventional formulas for greetings and farewells, introducing someone, saying "please," "thank you," "excuse me," etc.

Saper riconoscere parole che sono familiari ed espressioni molto semplici riferite a se stesso, alla propria famiglia e al proprio ambiente.
Comprensione scritta
Saper capire i nomi e le parole che sono familiari e frasi molto semplici, per es. quelle di annunci, cartelloni, cataloghi.
Produzione orale
Saper comprende e usare espressioni di uso quotidiano e frasi basilari tese a soddisfare bisogni di tipo concreto. Saper presentare se stesso/a e gli altri ed essere in grado di fare domande e rispondere su particolari personali come dove abita, le persone che conosce e le cose che possiede.
Riuscire a interagire in modo semplice se l’interlocutore è disposto a ripetere o a riformulare più lentamente certe cose e aiuta a formulare ciò che cerca di dire. Riuscire a porre e a rispondere a domande semplici su argomenti molto familiari o che riguardano bisogni immediati.
Produzione scritta
Avere un repertorio basico di parole ed espressioni relative alla sfera personale e a situazioni concrete di base.
Saper collegare parole e frasi con connettori di largo uso del tipo “di”, “a” e connettivi di base del tipo “e”, “ma”.
Saper scrivere frasi semplici relative alla propria persona o a personaggi reali o immaginari, descrivere dove vivono e cosa fanno.
Riuscire a scrivere una breve e semplice cartolina, per es. per mandare i saluti dalle vacanze. Riuscire a compilare moduli con dati personali scrivendo per es. il proprio nome, la nazionalità e l’indirizzo sulla scheda di registrazione di un albergo.
Appropriatezza sociolinguistica
Essere in grado di stabilire contatti sociali di base usando le più semplici formule convenzionali correnti per salutare e congedarsi, presentare qualcuno, dire “per favore”, “grazie”, “scusi” ecc.

Course delivery

Classes are in presence only at CLA_UNITO (Palazzo Nuovo or Campus Luigi Einaudi). Part of the course is delivered in e-learning through the Moodle platform.

Teaching delivery

It is a 60-hour blended course: 40 hours of in-presence classes plus 20 hours of autonomous learning on the Moodle platform. Cultural activities and extra meetings with Italian intern students will be part of the course as well.

Learning assessment methods

For the attending students (at least 70% of classes attended):

  • partial assessment during the classes
  • oral exam: a self presentation, a description of pictures and a dialogue

For the non-attending students (less than 70% of classes attended):

  • written exam: a computer-based test based on the A1-level language skills in Italian according to the CEFR. Students must pass the written part in order to take the oral exam.

Teaching period

Students who complete the enrollment process by October 5th will be able to attend classes in the first semester (October to December). Students who enroll after October 5th will be able to join the courses in the second semester (February to May).

Attendance requirements

Highly recommended. Students who attend at least 70% of classes are considered as “attending students”.
