Course objectives
The course provides the main concepts related to the thermodynamics and the kinetics of phase transformations, main metallurgical processes and alloys, mechanical properties. Furthermore, aspects related to the sustainability of metals production and use will be described, including green production, recycling, life cycle analysis, scraps treatment.
The concepts are applied to the detailed description of various types of alloys such as steels, light alloys, superalloys, new materials.

Results of learning outcomes
After following the course with profit, it is expected that the student has knowledge on the fundamentals of phase diagrams and on models of phase transformations in metals and alloys. He/she will be able to understand how different microstructures originate and will be able to work on their design in relation to the desired properties. He/she will have acquired skills on the use of industrial metallic materials in relation to the composition, heat treatment and mechanical properties. He/she will have knowledge of the main concepts related to a sustainable production and use of metallic materials.
