Course objectives

After attending the course (theoretical lessons and practical activities) the student will know about the technological and environmental applications of minerals, in particular:

     (i) natural sources of raw materials

(ii) applications of minerals with particular attention to the industry, environmental remediation, biomineralization, and biomimetic materials

(iii) application of some crystallographic techniques (X-ray powder diffraction, surface analysis)

Results of learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The course aims at providing the student with some basic knowledge about the application of natural raw materials (minerals) to everyday life

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: During the practice, some real cases will be discussed applying some crystallographic techniques (mainly X-ray diffraction and surface analysis)

Introduction and reasons why studying minerals in the material sciences.

Basics of descriptive mineralogy.

Minerals as non-renewable resources: clays, bentonite, lime, kaolin, feldspar, quartz, rock salt, talc, feldspathic and silicic sands.

    Minerals and metallurgy.

Minerals for the agriculture, food industry, pharmaceutics, ceramics, cement, high-tech.

Minerals and environmental hazards: water, air and soil mineral contamination.

Case studies: asbestos, silica, atmospheric particulate, arsenic hazard in water and soil.

    Minerals for the environmental remediation.

Case studies: Acid Mine Drainage, carbonation.

    Geopolymers.

Biominerals and biomimetic minerals. Medical applications (osteoinduction and osteoconduction). Pathologic mineralization.

       Case studies: fluorosis, rheumatoid arthritis
