Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage technology is attracting increasing interest in order to reduce carbon level in the atmosphere which in turn mitigates global climate issues. In this regard, highly efficient porous adsorbents exhibit considerable progress in post combustion CO2 capture. Moreover, CO2 emissions can be mitigated through its utilization as a feedstock to produce valuable chemicals.
The thesis work will be focused on the synthesis and characterization of porous materials with tailored micro- and meso-structures and targeted surface properties to be used as adsorbents for CO2 capture and possibly to its conversion to other products, as for example organic carbonates. A multi-technique approach by means of different experimental techniques will be employed to study the surface properties of these materials and to evaluate their uptake capacity and their interaction with CO2. In particular, volumetric techniques, adsorption microcalorimetry and in situ and operando IR spectroscopy will be used.
