More information

Cu-exchanged zeolites are currently the object of intensive research efforts to rationalize their promising performance in high-impact selective redox processes, including deNOx catalysis via NH3-assisted selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective oxidation of methane to methanol (MTM) through a chemical-looping approach.

Accessing detailed electronic/structural information on the Cu-species formed during pre-treatment and under reaction-relevant conditions is fundamental to unleash the potential of these systems. Our group has widely exploited in situ/operando hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Cu K-edge, carried out at synchrotron sources to shed light on the Cu-species hosted in zeolites during activation as well as during the redox process mentioned above. The thesis project focuses on the development and application of advanced data analysis approaches, aimed at further enhancing the sensitivity of XAS applied to Cu-zeolites, including:

  • statistical analysis and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) methods, to resolve Cu-speciation from large XAS datasets collected under realistic reaction conditions
  • advanced EXAFS analysis methods such as Wavelet Transform, to facilitate the discrimination of Cu-species with different nuclearity hosted in the zeolite framework.
