Course objectives

The lessons are aimed to provide to the students an overview on the most used experimental (and in minor part theoretical) methods providing information on the structure of matter in all its forms: solids (crystalline and amorphous) liquid and gases; pure and composite materials; bulk and nanostructured materials.

Il corso ha come obiettivo formativo quello di fornire agli studenti una panoramica delle tecniche sperimentali (e in minima parte teoriche) in grado di fornire informazioni sulla struttura della materia, in tutte le sue forme: solidi (cristallini e amorfi) liquidi, gas; materiali puri e compositi; solidi estesi e materiali nanostrutturati.

Theory. Interaction between radiation and matter. Absorbed, scattered (elastically and inelastically) and transmitted beams. Excitation and disexcitation processes. Nomenclature of atomic X-ray emission lines. Brief overview on different spectroscopies. Elastic scattering. Bragg scattering: powder and single crystal diffraction. Total scattering: small angle scattering (SAXS), high angle scattering (pair distribution function approach, PDF). Definition of the scattering vector q = 4 psin(q)/l. Differences and analogies among X-ray, neutrons and electron scattering. Atomic scale factors for X-ray, neutrons and electron vs. q. Magnetic scattering. Surface diffraction. Spectroscopies able to provide structural information: EXAFS, NMR, EPR and comparison with diffractometric techniques. Combined diffractometric and spectroscopic techniques: DAFS and X-ray standing waves. Structure optimization by ab initio calculation and comparison with experimental results.

Instrumentation. X-ray tubes. Point and area detectors. Setups for time resolved experiments. Description of synchrotrons: linak, synchrotron and storage ring. Description of beamlins. Neutron sources for science: nuclear reactors and pulsed sources. Neutron thermalization: thermal, cold and hot neutron sources. The time of fly technique (TOF).

Applications. Partially disordered materials: III-V semiconductor solid solutions, Brownmillerites, heteroatomic substitution inside zeolitic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Nanomaterials: semiconductor hetero and nanostructures, metal nanoparticles. Composite materials.

Teoria. Interazione fra radiazione e materia. Faci assorbiti, diffusi (elasticamente ed inelasticamente) e trasmessi. Processi eccitativi e diseccitativi. Nomenclatura delle linee atomiche di emissione di raggi X. Breve rassegna delle varie spettroscopie. Scattering elastico. Scattering di Bragg: diffrazione da cristallo singolo e da polveri. Scattering totale: diffusione a bassi angoli (SAXS), diffusione ad alti angoli (PDF). Definizione del vettore di scattering q = 4 psin(q)/l. Differenze ed anomalie fra diffusione di raggi X, elettroni e neutroni. Fattori di scala atomici di raggi X, elettroni e neutroni in funzione di q. Scattering magnetico. Diffrazione di superfici. Spettroscopie atte a fornire informazioni strutturali: EXAFS, NMR, EPR e confronto con le tecniche diffrattometriche. Tecniche spettroscopiche e diffrattometriche combinate: DAFS, XSW. Ottimizzazione di strutture con conti ab initio e confronto con dati sperimentali.

Strumentazione. Tubi a raggi X. Rivelatori puntuali ed ad area. Esperimenti risolti in tempo. Descrizione di un sincrotrone: linak, sincrotrone e anello di accumulazione. Descrizione di una beamline. Sorgenti di neutroni per la scienza: reattori nucleari e sorgenti pulsate. Termalizzazione di neutroni. Sorgenti di neutroni termalizzate, calde e fredde. La tecnica del tempo di volo (TOF).

Applicazioni. Materiali parzialmente disordinati: soluzioni solide di semiconduttori III-V, Brownmilleriti, zeoliti sostituite con eternatomi, reticoli metallorganici (MOFs). Nanomateriali: semiconduttori hetero- e nano-strutturati, nanoparticelle metalliche. Materiali compositi.
