Sommario del corso

Course objectives

The course focuses on two different topics related to modern modelling techniques: Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Termodynamics of Solids. On one hand, the aim is to introduce students the fundamentals of the theory and the ab-initio methods derived from DFT. On the other hand, fundamentals of thermodynamics of solids will be presented

Oggetto:

Results of learning outcomes

L’allievo dovrà essere in grado di

  • a) conoscere i fondamenti della teoria DFT: teoremi di Hohenberg-Kohn, formulazione di Kohn-Sham, origine del funzionale di scambio e correlazione;

Students are expected:

a) To undrestand fundamentals of Density Functional Theory: Hohenberg-Kohn theorems, Kohn-Sham formalism, meaning of the eXchange-Correlation (XC) functional

b) To know the main features of Density Functional appromximated methods: to assess the accuracy of DFT calculations and interpret the results.

c) To use results from ab-initio calculations to predict thermodynamic properties of solids
