Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the mathematical basis for following studies, in particular the aspects related to modelling.
The course is concerned with characterisation of finite groups of transformations and numerical approximation of partial and ordinary differential equations.

At the end of the course students will be able to discuss the invariance for a given structure under the action of a group of transformations and compute its invariant characteristics.
Students will gain knowledge of the main methods of discretization of differential problems together with the fundamental mathematical properties of consistency, stability and convergence. Will they build in Matlab some numerical models that describe physical phenomena of considerable interest.

Course delivery
L’insegnamento è diviso in 2 moduli.

The first part on finite groups of transformations is made of 32 hours of lectures in which the necessary notions will be introduced and suited examples will be discussed in detail.
The second part about numerical analysis is made of 32 hours of lectures.
Attending the lectures is not mandatory.
ALTERNATIVE TEACHING - In concurrence with the COVID-19 emergency and in compliance with the relevant dispositions of the Ministry and of the University, the course will be also offered in remote teaching mode, by
- online synchronous and asynchronous lessons- the informations will be available in Moodle.
- Lessons recordings which will be made available in due time in Moodle.
- Students are encouraged to register to the course in Moodle and as soon as possible in CampusNET, to receive efficient communications and updates by e-mail.
